The production of livestock in Canada generates more than 200 megatonnes of manure each year, producing the methane equivalent of nearly 4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. In response, Canada maintains more than 16 operational anaerobic digester systems using farm and food industry biomass. The resulting biogas is used to provide on-site hear or electricity.
Canada is also active in supporting GMI partners and projects internationally. In recent years, Canada and Mexico have committed to work together to study the applicability of robust low temperature anaerobic digestion technologies to the management of livestock manure, a significant source of methane.

Project Description: Under the auspices of the Canada-Mexico Partnership, this project was established to develop feasibility study for use of agricultural waste from swine farms in the Yucatan Peninsula to generate clean energy.
Achievements:This project delivered a detailed feasibility study identifying site characteristics, design and engineering specifications to implement a biodigester on a swine farm in Merida, on the Yucatan Peninsula, and convert the biogas produced into clean energy and reuse manure nutrients to reduce the need in fossils-based fertilizers.
